Doulas in Albuquerque

A doula is a great resource during pregnancy, birth, and even postpartum. They offer both you and your partner support, serve as a resource and cheerleader, and can work in any birthing environment. Doulas can also support you through experiences such as trying to conceive or having a stillbirth or miscarriage.

Thank you to Lovelace Health System for sponsoring this guide.

What is a doula?

Think of doulas as birth experts who guide people through their birth journey. They provide continuous, one-on-one care, as well as evidence-based information, physical and emotional support to birthing people and their partners.

During early labor, doulas often meet with their clients when labor is consistent, but before it’s time to head to the hospital or before the homebirth midwife arrives. As labor progresses, at the hospital or at home, doulas advocate for their patients, communicate birth plans, ease pain, and take care of mom during and after labor.

There are also postpartum doulas who are trained to help during the immediate months after birth, known as the fourth trimester.

I had a doula with all three of my births, and I highly recommend them, especially for first-time moms. My husband does too!

During my first labor, I had intense back labor because baby was turned sideways, pressing his head on my spine. My doula helped my husband and me with labor positions that encouraged baby to turn into a more optimal birth position. She pressed on my hips during contractions to ease the back pain and made sure I ate and drank to keep up my energy. I was able to have the unmedicated birth I dreamed of, and baby and I were healthy and happy, all thanks to our doula.
