Say, “I love you!” with these DIY heart-shaped crayons for Valentine’s Day!

DIY heart-shaped crayons

Does your crayon box need a little TLC? More than half of our crayons have snapped and the others are sporting partly torn wrappers. Does this sound familiar? The dismal state of our crayons often prompts my husband to remind our team that “broken crayons draw the same.” However, coloring with DIY heart-shaped crayons is far more satisfying! Follow this 5-step recipe to create your own.

  • Box of wax crayons
  • Heart-shaped silicone baking sheet, available locally at Smith’s and on Amazon
  • Oven

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 300° F.

Step 2: Remove the wrappers from your crayons.

Toddlers will love to help with this step! Peeling off the wrapper will help your child develop fine motor skills and strengthen the muscles in their fingers–these are important skills for learning how to write.

Step 3: Break your crayons into small pieces.

There’s something about allowing my child to break things that turns me into a “cool mom.” Turns out, adults find satisfaction in snapping crayons too! While my hands were busy breaking, my toddler was busy sorting crayons by color and filling our silicone baking sheet. If your little one likes to mix colors, that’s great too! Rainbow crayons are encouraged.

Step 4: Bake for approximately 12 minutes.

If you’re using a silicone baking sheet, place your sheet on top of a flat cookie sheet for added stability. Then, bake at 300° F for 12 minutes or until your crayons are fully melted. (Note: At 10 minutes, I checked on my baking sheet and noticed some crayons were clumpy and not fully melted. I used a toothpick to stir each cup and continued baking for 2 more minutes.)

Step 5: Cool it.

Remove your silicone baking sheet from the oven and let it cool for 10-20 minutes. To speed up this process, you can place your baking sheet in the refrigerator. When your crayons are done drying, they will be easy to remove and should not leave any residue.
