Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Check out the Coronado Historic Site in Bernalillo!
History
The historic site is the location of the Kuau Pueblo ruins, which were excavated in the 1930s. You can learn the history of the ruins and the excavation process in the indoor museum. There are even some fun interactive stations geared towards children. Play on the pueblo drums (my toddler’s favorite thing ever), try on some armor, or build your very own pueblo on the computer. I enjoyed seeing the artifacts and reading about the excavation process. After the museum, head outside to explore the pueblo ruins. And don’t forget to ask for a guided tour of the painted Kiva!
Nature
After you soak in all the history, take a walk down to the Rio Grande. My daughter loved tossing rocks into the river! The trek to the Rio is quite adventurous, and there are several steep steps to get down to the river. I had to pack my stroller in the car and wear my baby for the walk. The views are totally worth it, though! Be sure to wear a hat and sunscreen since there is not a lot of shade. We enjoyed the scenery and skipping rocks on the water before having lunch.
Perfect Picnic Views
The Coronado Historic Site is the perfect picnic spot! There are a few shaded picnic tables overlooking the Rio Grande. I could’ve stayed there all day watching the water and taking it all in. One thing I love about living in Albuquerque is how you can drive 30 minutes from your house and feel like you’re in another world. The Coronado Historic Site was no exception. We left feeling like true explorers, and I can’t wait to go back!
