Life Lessons from an Old Push Mower

I recently asked a friend if I could borrow their lawn mower. They mentioned it was a push mower, and I thought, “Sure, that’s fine!” What I didn’t expect was an ancient push mower with exposed blades—a trip to the ER just waiting to happen.

When I saw it, I was shocked. I didn’t even know how to use it! But I thought, “Why not learn a new skill?” and decided to give it a try.

push mowerThe first time I pushed it onto the grass, I had it backwards. Once I figured out the right direction, I realized I needed to go over the same spot about twenty times to get it short enough. Oh, and every time, I had to get a running start just to get the blades moving fast enough! I quickly learned this wasn’t going to be easy. But I was determined to finish the job.

A week later, I was almost done!

As I pushed that mower back and forth, it got me thinking about life. Life isn’t easy. Sometimes, we get thrown into situations we don’t like or aren’t prepared for. It’s all about the attitude we bring to the challenge. Sometimes, we need to stop, realize we’re doing it wrong, and start again. Other times, we face the same challenge repeatedly until we understand why it’s ours to face.

I’ve had my share of trials in life, moments that have deeply humbled me. Some of you know about these challenges, and some of you might not. But they’ve shaped who I am today.

This brings me to parenthood. Every day, I learn something new about being a parent.

From the moment you find out you’re pregnant, the trials begin: What should I eat? How much should I sleep? Then, when the baby arrives, the decisions keep coming—breastfeeding or formula? And once that delicate baby grows into a child, they start testing boundaries, and, oh boy, do those “three-nagers” keep us on our toes!

And to think, this whole reflection started with an old lawn mower and a week of hard work . . .
