An Ode to Volunteer Coaches

How can we possibly thank you for putting up with our kids’ antics and um, putting up with us? Here’s a an Ode to Volunteer Coaches, a tribute, if you will. But we’re sure it doesn’t even scratch the surface for the thanks you deserve.

The paycheck is nothing,

but you have everything

in your trunk.

Helmets, balls, sunscreen, and water.

You wipe tears, boogers, and blood.

You put up with parents, emails, and questions.

I’m sorry we forgot his glove,

I’m sorry we forgot her kneepads.

I’m sorry I’m leaving my kid with you to run to Walmart while you sweat in a hot gym/field/natatorium with 14 six-year-olds who just want to wrestle and pick dandelions.

Thank you. I’ll bring whatever snacks you want.

And at the banquet, I’ll buy you a cocktail.
