Beginning Early: Why the First Years Matter More Than We Realize

There are a few basic things that everyone needs to know about me: I love being a mom, I am a chronic overthinker, I stress about everything, and I lose a lot of sleep when I need to make a big decision. My kids are my whole world, and if a decision involves them, I research everything and make sure that I am making the best decision for them.

The school decision has been one that has sent me into a tailspin. I wish I was kidding. I am the daughter of a teacher. Since I was young, the importance of education has been drilled into my head. Choosing a school is a lot of pressure.

I had a very traditional education, and my husband did as well. We are both well educated, but as I watch my kids learn, I understand more that a traditional education is not for everyone.

Where should I send my child? What is the right age to send my child to school? Where do I start?

The most important years of your child’s education begin long before kindergarten—they begin at birth.

There is something so sacred about the early years. The way your baby studies your face. The way tiny hands reach, grasp, and explore. And the way a toddler insists, “I do it myself.” These moments can feel small in the day-to-day blur of motherhood. But, in reality, they are anything but small.

From the very beginning, your child is building the foundation for who they will become. Long before formal schooling begins, their brain is forming millions of connections through movement, language, touch, and connection.

Dr. Maria Montessori described young children as having an “absorbent mind.”

From birth, children effortlessly soak in their environment. The words we speak, the order of a room, the tone of our voices, and the opportunities we provide for independence all become part of who they are as a person.

This is why early education isn’t about flashcards or pushing academics too soon. It’s about intention. It’s about creating an environment that respects the child as capable from the very start.

If you’ve ever watched your toddler concentrate on pouring water, buttoning a sweater, or lining up toys just so, you’ve witnessed something profound: the deep, internal desire to master their world.

In a Montessori environment, even the youngest children are trusted. Infant spaces allow for freedom of movement. Toddlers are given real materials sized for small hands. Classrooms are calm, ordered, and thoughtfully prepared so children can explore independently and confidently.

Instead of rushing children forward, Montessori meets them exactly where they are. Montessori nurtures concentration, confidence, and joy in discovery.

Few phrases are more powerful than a small child declaring, “I can do it.”

When we invest in early education, we are investing in that confidence. We are giving children opportunities to dress themselves, prepare a snack, choose meaningful work, solve problems independently, and care for their environment.

These experiences may seem simple, but they build resilience, self-trust, and intrinsic motivation. They shape children who believe in their own capabilities.

Choosing early Montessori education is not about getting ahead. It’s about honoring childhood. It’s about protecting curiosity instead of replacing it with pressure. Montessori education is about fostering empathy, grace, and respect alongside literacy and math. It’s about creating a foundation rooted in confidence and calm.

In a Montessori classroom, children learn to collaborate, wait their turn, care for others, and take responsibility. They develop focus and independence in an environment that feels steady and nurturing. They feel safe to grow.

The early years pass in a blink. The baby who once reached for your hand will one day walk confidently into the world on their own.

Investing in your child’s education from birth is one of the most meaningful gifts you can give. It sends a message from the very start: You are capable. You are respected. You are trusted.

At Montessori One, education doesn’t begin with a desk. It begins with wonder. It begins with the deep belief that even the smallest child is worthy of thoughtful, intentional learning from the very first day.

And that is a beginning that lasts a lifetime.
