Building a Life from the Floor Up: How One Couple Is Grounding Their Business in Family & Community

From building a home to helping others create the foundation of their own homes, Michael Feferman and his wife, Rachel, have made it their goal to help build up the families of New Mexico, starting with their flooring.

Having worked 20 years as an entrepreneur before 5 years in a corporate job, Michael wanted to ensure that his next career milestone was one that both he and his family could be proud of.

“We wanted to start a business where we could feel good every day about what we were doing for our customers,” Michael said. “We wanted to be proud of the work we were doing and give a good experience we could take home with us every night.”

When the opportunity to partner with Floor Coverings International came along, it wasn’t just Michael who was excited—his wife, Rachel, was equally enthusiastic about the path ahead.

“I was really excited when Michael wanted to go into this specific line of work,” Rachel said. “My mom was a contractor and then an interior designer, so she always was a small business owner in people’s homes and working with their homes. And so this really felt very familiar to me. And when we decided to move back to Albuquerque from Austin, I know that one thing that was important to us was to be part of the community and really kind of entrenched in the community.”

For Michael and Rachel Feferman, returning to Albuquerque and building their own home sparked more than a personal milestone. It ignited a shared mission to help other New Mexico families lay strong foundations of their own, beginning quite literally with the floors beneath their feet.

As parents, they understand the daily juggling act of family life. Both credit much of their success to a well-honed balance of teamwork and a lot of spreadsheets.

“I think we really have learned that it’s important that when we define family that it includes time for our marriage and time for each other and then also time for ourselves,” Rachel said with a smile. “I’m an introvert in an extrovert’s world. And it’s really important that I have some recharge time, and then make sure that we’ve got time with the kids and all together. One thing that I think we do is not just having time for all of us together as a family, but time with each kid.”

Michael agreed wholeheartedly, explaining that by intentionally carving out time for the things that matter most—beginning with his relationship with Rachel, their children, and their closest loved ones—they’ve been able to build a work-life balance that revolves around connection rather than conflict.

“The best you can do is make the time you have high-quality,” Michael said. “We may not have enough of it. We’ll never feel like we have enough of it. But making sure that you really are appreciating and making as much as you can out of it, I think that is our attitude.”

From the initial consultation, where clients choose their flooring, to the final installation and care instructions, the goal is to make every step seamless. He aims for each customer to feel like they have a partner in the process, with an approach that feels easy, clear, and personalized. That commitment to service and support is one of the key ways Albuquerque’s Floor Coverings International distinguishes itself.

One way this is achieved is through their mobile showroom, which features a carefully curated selection of over 3,000 samples. Team members bring the showroom directly to customers, offering a wide range of materials and price points to explore—all from the comfort of home.

“Plus, if you’re looking for something unique, we always talk to our customers before we come out to your home,” Michael said with an encouraging smile. “We’ll pull that from our studio collection into the mobile showroom. So we can get you access to anything out there.”

By offering this service, Michael aims to make building the foundation of his customers’ homes a less overwhelming experience—eliminating the need for them to run all over town by bringing a wide variety of options directly to their doorstep.

By acting as thoughtful guides throughout the process, Michael and his team help customers find the right balance of quality and cost. They’re able to curate a stress-free experience tailored to their clients’ needs.

As a proud part of the Albuquerque community, Floor Coverings International’s local team builds meaningful connections with its customers, grounded in the values of Albuquerque, personal service, and a shared sense of home.

“I want people to know that we are local, like really local,” Michael said. “I grew up here, graduated from Albuquerque High. We’re a company and a team that cares a lot about this city and this community, and like Rachel says, cares a lot about doing really good work for the people that we’re working with.”

“I’m trying not to get pitchy on this one, but I will just say, we’ve got somebody here that cares so much about the people that he supports and cares so much about the community,” Rachel said with a proud smile. “I think that there’s a lot of impersonal experiences out there, and one thing that I’m really proud of is that when you work with Floor Coverings International, you get a lot of care and somebody who’s really, really committed to each individual that he’s working with and I’m really proud of him for that.”
