Why Winter Is the Best Time to Visit the Albuquerque Zoo

When most people think of zoo days, they picture hot summer afternoons, sunscreen, and crowds weaving between exhibits. But after living in Albuquerque and spending time at the BioPark Zoo across all seasons, I’ve discovered that winter might actually be the best time to go, especially with kids.

Our winter zoo visits have quickly become some of our favorites. The pace is slower, the animals are more active, and there’s a sense of freedom you don’t always get during peak seasons. If you’ve never considered the zoo as a winter outing, here’s why I think it deserves a spot on your cold-weather calendar.

Smaller Crowds, More Room to Explore

One of the first things I notice every time we visit the zoo in winter is how calm it feels. With fewer visitors, there’s so much more space to move freely. No waiting behind large groups to catch a glimpse of an exhibit, and no rushing kids along because others are waiting.

The paths feel wider, the viewing areas are quieter, and the entire experience feels more relaxed. My kids can take their time observing animals, asking questions, and lingering at their favorite spots without feeling rushed. For parents, that alone is a win!

The Animals Are More Active

Winter weather brings a surprising bonus: the animals are often out and about. During warmer months, it’s common to see animals seeking shade or hiding from the heat. In cooler temperatures, many of them seem more playful, alert, and visible.

We’ve watched cheetahs moving around their habitats, gorillas interacting with each other, and even playing; moments that are much easier to catch when they aren’t trying to escape the sun. It makes the visit more engaging for kids, who love being able to actually see what they came for.

Space to Let Kids Be Kids

Another reason winter zoo days work so well for our family is the freedom it gives my kids to move. With fewer crowds, they can walk at their own pace, stop to look closely at exhibits, and burn off energy without feeling confined.

There’s something about the open layout of the zoo that feels especially inviting in winter. We often bring lunch and take advantage of the open spaces to sit, eat, and relax without fighting for a table. The cooler air makes it comfortable to linger, and the quieter environment turns lunch into a peaceful break rather than a rushed pit stop.

Plenty of Indoor Exhibits to Warm Up

If you’re worried about staying warm, the Albuquerque BioPark Zoo has plenty of indoor spaces that make winter visits easy. These exhibits aren’t just warm, but they’re some of the most fascinating parts of the zoo!

The reptile and amphibian areas are always a hit with my kids. They love getting an up-close look at creatures they don’t see every day, and I love that it gives us a cozy break from the cooler air.

The penguin exhibit is another favorite. Watching them swim and waddle never gets old, and it’s the perfect spot to linger while warming up because there are two interactive spots as you make your way down. Having these indoor options makes it simple to balance outdoor exploring with comfortable breaks inside.

Easy Winter Layers and Comfort

Winter zoo visits are all about layers. One of the things I appreciate most is how easy it is to adjust throughout the day. Jackets can come off when the sun is out, hats can go back on when clouds roll in, and no one is stuck overheating (or complaining).

Compared to summer trips, there’s no worrying about sunburns, extreme heat, or kids getting worn down too quickly. Everyone stays comfortable, which means better moods all around and longer visits!

Perfect for Photos

If you love capturing memories, winter at the zoo offers some great photo opportunities. The softer light, fewer people in the background, and active animals make it easier to snap beautiful photos.

I find myself taking more pictures during our winter visits simply because there’s less chaos. Whether it’s kids bundled up in layers, animals clearly visible in their habitats, or quiet moments along the paths, the setting feels ideal for capturing memories.

A Different Kind of Zoo Day

Winter at the Albuquerque BioPark Zoo feels slower, calmer, and more intentional. It’s a chance to truly enjoy the animals, let kids explore freely, and take in everything the zoo has to offer without the hustle of peak season.

If you’re looking for an outdoor activity that still feels manageable during cooler months, I can’t recommend a winter zoo visit enough. It’s become one of our favorite ways to get outside, learn together, and make memories, without the crowds.

Sometimes the best experiences come when you least expect them, and for our family, winter at the zoo has been one of those unexpected favorites!
