Santa Fe Family Weekend Itinerary
Santa Fe is one of those places that’s easy to skip over when you live in Albuquerque. It’s so close. You’ve probably gone a dozen times for field trips, a quick weekend getaway, or holiday shopping. But going now with kids? Totally different.
For me, Santa Fe is full of memories. I spent a lot of weekends at my cousin’s house when we were teens. She always thought Albuquerque seemed so exciting with the “big city” stuff, but I loved how cozy Santa Fe felt. Everywhere we went, someone knew her name. That sense of community always stuck with me.
Now, raising my own kids, I love seeing Santa Fe through their eyes. They don’t care about adobe buildings or Georgia O’Keefe, but give them a good playground, a fun museum, and maybe some chocolate, and everyone’s happy.
We’ve put together a 3-day Santa Fe itinerary with family-friendly spots, budget-friendly options, and a few mom-tested tricks to make it easy.

Day 1
On the Way + Railyard Exploring
Morning
Leave ABQ by 8:00 AM (coffee in hand!) and make a stop at Bandelier National Monument to stretch your legs and soak in some history.
-
Walk the Pueblo Loop Trail (1.4 miles): a fun loop with ladders, caves, and ancient dwellings.
-
Entry is $25 per vehicle.
🌟ABQ Mom Tip: Baby-wearing is easier than a stroller here, especially if you’re climbing. Dress in layers and bring snacks and water.
Lunch in Santa Fe
-
Budget pick: Grab lunch at Bumble Bee’s Baja Grill (easy, casual tacos and bowls) or Back Road Pizza.
-
Upgrade option: Tomasita’s (yes, there’s one in ABQ, but the Santa Fe location is the original and still a favorite). Kids can stick to chicken tenders or burgers, and the sopapillas come with everything.
Afternoon
Head over to the Railyard District to walk around and explore.
-
Younger kids? Hit the Railyard Park playground for climbing and open space.
-
Older kids? Try SITE Santa Fe, a contemporary art museum that’s always got something interesting going on (suggested donation = pay what you can).
Check into your hotel or rental and give everyone a little downtime to recharge. A quiet hour goes a long way before dinner.
Fun downtime idea:
Pack a simple craft like drawing animals you saw at Bandelier or playing “Santa Fe Would You Rather . . . “
-
Would you rather eat red or green chile for the rest of your life?
-
Would you rather hike Bandelier or explore Meow Wolf?
-
Would you rather ride a burro or ski in the summer?
Dinner
- Cowgirl BBQ— good food and a built-in outdoor play area. They often have live music and a good, fun atmosphere for the whole family.
Day 2
Morning
Start your day with breakfast at Flying Tortilla. It’s got a great diner vibe and food everyone will recognize and love.
Then head to the Santa Fe Children’s Museum—a must-do for families.
It’s small enough to manage and packed with hands-on exhibits and a garden area outside.
-
New Mexico Resident Entry- $12.50 for adults, $9.00 for children, $8.00 for Senior Citizens (65+), babies under 1 are free
-
Out-of-State Residents Entry- $14.50 for adults, $11.00 for children, $8.00 for Senior Citizens (65+), babies under 1 are free
🌟 ABQ Mom Tip: If your kiddo loves water play, pack a change of clothes. The gift shop is a great spot for souvenirs: science kits or toys instead of another stuffed animal. Bonus: admission is free on Thursdays from 4–6 p.m.
Lunch
Counter Culture Café – laid-back, funky, and kid-friendly with a great patio if the weather is good.
Afternoon Options
Pick based on your family’s energy level:
Option A:
Meow Wolf
Totally immersive, very wild, and something your kids will talk about for weeks.
-
Plan for 1.5–2 hours at least.
-
Tickets are $25–$40 depending on age and time (NM residents get a discount with valid ID).
🌟 ABQ Mom Tip: If your kiddo gets overstimulated, bring headphones or plan to arrive right at opening when things are calmer. Tickets do sell out, so grab yours early!
Option B:
Nature Discovery Area at Randall Davey Audubon Center
Quiet trails, shady spots, and wildlife with a treehouse, shaded picnic area, seed library, sand area, and spaces to climb and explore.
-
Free (donations welcome).
-
Bring binoculars if you have them!
- Find all the details here.
Dinner
The Shed—great food, casual enough for kids, and right near the Plaza.
Evening
Wrap up with a golden hour walk to the Cross of the Martyrs. It’s a short walk up a hill with gorgeous views of the city. Great place for a family photo.
🌟 ABQ Mom Tip: Bring water, jackets, comfortable shoes, and maybe something sweet for motivation.
Day 3
Museum Hill + Local Treasures
Morning
Start with breakfast at Dolina Bakery & Cafe—you can’t go wrong with pastries and burritos here. If the weather’s nice, sit outside.
Then head over to Museum Hill, where you can choose between:
-
Museum of International Folk Art – bright, colorful, and full of miniature dioramas that are fun to explore.
-
Museum of Indian Arts & Culture – great for older kids and tweens interested in history and culture.
🌟 ABQ Mom Tip: Both museums are stroller-friendly and right next to each other with shared parking. There are also sculpture gardens outside that are fun to walk around.
Lunch
Head back toward downtown for The Pantry Rio—easygoing and delicious. Great for a full meal or just some chips and guacamole if you’re not super hungry.
Afternoon Options
Option A:
Genoveva Chavez Community Center
Want to burn off energy before the ride home? This place has a pool with water play features, a skating rink, and lots of space to run.
-
Small entry fee
Option B:
Canyon Road
This is a more relaxed walk for kids who enjoy a little art and a lot of window shopping. This is a great spot to round out the scavenger hunt.
One Last Treat
Before heading home, stop by Kakawa Chocolate House for sipping chocolate (hot or iced) or a final treat to go. You earned it.
