Over the last few years, there has been a big movement of people hating on anything “basic,” especially around Fall time! I believe this word has evolved to mean “mainstream” and “boring.” But I’m here to defend the basic. After all, they’re basic for a reason. Here are a few things about fall I love that I think deserve to be loved by others.

1. Pumpkin Spice
A classic. The best. As you may have guessed by the title, I love pumpkin spice. All the food, drinks, and candles that are pumpkin spice fill my soul with joy. And did you know that pumpkins are native to North America? That’s right, pumpkins have been here for thousands of years!
2. Oversized Sweaters
Comfy, cute, comes in various colors and styles, these sweaters reign supreme and I don’t feel the need to elaborate any further. (But I will, here are some links to oversized sweaters at Nordstrom, Target, and Amazon.)
3. Pumpkin Patches
I’m back to pumpkins again. I just love them! Something about being outside in the cool fall air is so refreshing (especially after our hot NM summers!). I love seeing my kids excited to pick their own pumpkins. And I love getting to take cute fall pics for Instagram.
4. Soup
Fall is soup season. There is no debating that. Soup is usually easy and doesn’t make as big of a mess as other dinners might. Soup is comfort, warmth, and deliciousness.
5. Balloon Fiesta
Okay, this one is less basic for the rest of the world, but for us ABQ girlies, the Balloon Fiesta is a must-do every October. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! If you haven’t gone yet, trust me, you won’t regret it!
6. Halloween
Halloween is a classic holiday. I love that all ages can celebrate, and I love that we give candy to strangers and cute little kids. I love seeing neighborhoods come together to help these kids have a good night. It’s so fun, and I will be celebrating every year!
7. Chile Roasting
I will always be buying roasted green chiles every fall here in NM. The smell alone is enough to draw anyone in. I love supporting the local farms and adding green chile to nearly all of my food.

Defending the “basic” is less about defending the items and activities themselves, but more about defending our right to do what we want in the Fall without judgment. Don’t let anyone tell you what you can or can’t do this fall.
