Of Mice And Men at the Adobe Theater
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is a poignant tragedy that centers around two migrant field hands, the average looking but smart George and the strong but mentally challenged Lennie who find work on a farm in California during the Great Depression. Their dream of owning their own farm is shattered when Lennie has an incident with the wife of the boss’s son. (directed by Nancy Sellin)
Steinbeck’s treatment of prejudice and cruelty against women, the physically and developmentally disabled, the elderly, the poor, and of animals reminds us of a time when this treatment was normalized and of how far we yet have to go in our society. Although it can be somewhat uncomfortable to hear the language and look at the circumstances, it is the kind of reflection which can open us up to understanding and compassion for all, including ourselves.
