I have to admit, I was not a dancer growing up. Not even a little bit. I couldn’t tell you the name of any local dance companies. I can’t list the different kinds of dance. A few years ago, I learned about the National Dance Institute of New Mexico (NDI). Every time they are brought up, I learn something new and I’m continuously impressed when I find out more.
NDI has been a cornerstone of the Albuquerque community for the last 30 years.
Not only do they offer classes at the historic Hiland Theater in Albuquerque, but they also offer programs for students throughout the state of New Mexico. Their programs provide many benefits for children, including physical development, mental and emotional well-being, social skills, cultural awareness, and artistic expression.
NDI wants to be known not just as a dance company, but also as an art and cultural hub in Albuquerque.
The need became especially apparent in 2020 when the pandemic hit and children were left without community. NDI began to rethink the way they serve the community. Located in Albuquerque’s International District, NDI is placed in an ideal spot to make a huge difference. This summer, they have hosted free family movie nights which included free meals and raffles.
Last December, NDI held its first Community Day, and on August 3, they are hosting another.
Community Day – End of Summer Blast is an opportunity to come see all that NDI has to offer, sign up for classes, watch performances, and so much more. Not only will NDI students be performing, but there will also be Rock 101, and School of Rock performances as well. There will be activities for everyone, including bounce houses and even activities sponsored by Explora.
There will be back-to-school giveaways, raffles, and fun. Locker 505 will be supporting the event, as will other pillars in the community, such as IDHCC Food Hub, Southwestern Holistics, Explora, United Way of Central New Mexico, and many more. The event provides resources and connection for youth and their families, especially as we head back to school.
You will also be able to sign up for the fall dance season at the event. With over 65 classes for everyone in your family aged three to adult, it’s definitely worth checking out. Not sure what to sign up for? NDI will have staff onsite to help you figure out what is best for you!
The event is for families with children of all ages and is taking place from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Hiland Theater.
The National Dance Institute of New Mexico has spent the last thirty years believing that every child has the capacity to learn, work hard, and see their hard work pay off. They have supported children’s well-being. NDI helps children gain confidence and become more engaged in learning. Their programs provide numerous benefits for children, including physical development, mental and emotional well-being, and social skills.
