McDonald’s is a name known around the world. Many of us grew up with Happy Meals, eagerly diving in to see what toy we got. But times have changed, and for many families today, fast food isn’t the go-to option it once was. Our generation has shifted toward prioritizing whole foods and moving away from fast-food chains like McDonald’s.
Personally, that’s not me—though I’ve considered it. McDonald’s is convenient, it’s quick, and let’s be honest, we all love that orange Hi-C. For me, it used to be just a backup plan when I was too busy to cook. But that perspective changed when I got a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to run a McDonald’s. It’s pretty fascinating!
The Aragon family invited ABQ Mom to their restaurant at Montgomery and Wyoming, and from the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed.
I was greeted by a gentleman at the door and had the opportunity to meet the incredible team that keeps this location running smoothly. The Aragons shared their inspiring journey with me—starting as crew members right after high school and now owning 6 McDonald’s locations in the Albuquerque area, providing jobs for many fellow New Mexicans.
And they’re not the only ones. As I toured the restaurant, I met employees who had worked their way up from entry-level positions to leadership roles, including their Director of Operations, who also started as a crew member. Talk about a real “started from the bottom, now we’re here” moment!
But what stood out most was the Aragon family’s commitment to giving back.
They are deeply involved in the community, supporting various service projects and initiatives that make a real impact. Whether through local fundraisers, charity events, or other outreach efforts, they truly care about Albuquerque and the people who call it home.
During my tour, I saw firsthand just how busy these locations are. Yet, there’s a beautifully orchestrated system in place that keeps everything running seamlessly. I also learned some surprising facts: McDonald’s uses real eggs in their breakfast sandwiches and all of their beef and produce are locally sourced. Wow!
Another fun fact I found interesting? McDonald’s burgers are not pre-made.
They’re actually made to order on a high-tech grill that perfectly times the cooking process, ensuring each patty is fresh, sizzling, and ready to be wrapped. No pre-made burgers sitting around here!
And let’s talk about the real star of the menu—the French fries. There is absolutely nothing like them. Crispy, salty, and straight-up iconic. And if you’ve never dipped them into McDonald’s ice cream, are you even living? That sweet and salty combo is next-level delicious!
McDonald’s may not be a small mom-and-pop shop, but it plays a big role in our community by creating hundreds of jobs in Albuquerque and beyond. And thanks to owners like the Aragons, it’s more than just a restaurant—it’s a business that gives back.
