DESCRIPTION:As the zoo transforms for an evening of discovery\, journey through some of the continent’s most fascinating habitats—from the dense rainforests of the Congo Rainforest and unique island environments of Madagascar and the Aldabra atoll\, to the expansive savannas and lively watering holes that support Africa’s iconic wildlife. \nDesigned for families of all ages\, this interactive evening will feature hands-on activities\, animal encounters\, educational stations\, games\, crafts\, and opportunities to learn about remarkable species such as gorillas\, lemurs\, giant tortoises\, hippos\, giraffes\, zebras\, and more! SUMMARY:Omenka Igbo Cultural Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Jon us for this free cultural celebration. \n\nThe Igbo ancient civilization\, one of the pivotal cultures in West Africa\, showcases a rich history supported by fascinating archaeological discoveries. The Igbo people primarily inhabited the southeastern region of present-day Nigeria\, and their civilization dates back to at least the 9th century AD. One of the most significant archaeological sites is Igbo-Ukwu\, where excavations in the 1930s unearthed a wealth of artifacts that provide insight into the advanced nature of Igbo society. \nThe Igbo-Ukwu findings include intricately crafted bronze sculptures\, beads\, and pottery\, indicating a high level of sophistication in metalwork and artistic expression. These artifacts suggest that the Igbo were engaged in extensive trade networks\, exchanging goods with neighboring regions and possibly even distant cultures. The discovery of glass beads\, likely imported from the Middle East or Europe\, further supports this notion of extensive trade connections. \nAdditionally\, the presence of ceremonial objects and regalia points to a complex social structure with religious and political institutions. The craftsmanship and artistry of the Igbo people were not only functional but also carried significant symbolic and cultural meanings\, reflecting their rich spiritual beliefs and societal values. \nThese archaeological facts not only highlight the ingenuity and resilience of the Igbo civilization but also contribute significantly to our understanding of ancient African societies. As the 2026 Cultural Festival unfolds\, attendees will have the opportunity to explore these fascinating aspects of Igbo heritage\, celebrating a civilization that has profoundly influenced the cultural landscape of Africa and beyond.
