DESCRIPTION:The free Placitas Studio Tour\, traditionally held over Mother’s Day Weekend has now become a three-day event\, beginning Friday\, May 8 and continuing through Mother’s Day Sunday\, May 10\, 2026\, from 10am-5pm all three days. \nNestled in the base of the northern Sandia Mountains\, forty-eight studios scattered throughout beautiful Placitas will host sixty-two artists for its 29th Annual Placitas Studio Tour.  What makes the tour different from other studio tours is\, only artists who live or have their full-time studio in Placitas can participate in the tour. This unique opportunity offers a once-a-year-behind-the-scenes opportunity to visit artists’ studios where inspiration and creativity merge into amazing art. \nCreations in paintings\, steel\, pottery\, glass\, fiber\, mosaic\, ceramics\, jewelry\, sculpture\, wood\, photography\, gourd art\, paper\, metal\, wearables\, mixed media and so much more will be for sale. \nThe public is invited to the free Preview Exhibit at the Placitas Community Library which offers a month-long exhibition featuring work by all sixty-two participating artists. The theme for WMBD 2026 is “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter!” This year’s theme highlights the important role of community science (also referred to as citizen science) for the conservation of migratory birds.  \nOn May 9\, park staff\, volunteers and our event partners\, the Bird Alliance of Central New Mexico\, is excited to welcome visitors of all ages to the Quarai Unit for several bird count hikes throughout the day\, an educational presentation by the Bird Alliance of Central New Mexico on “Bird Migration and Bird ID\,” and for Jr. Ranger activities\, giveaways and much more!  \nPrograms include:   \n\n8AM – 10AM — 1st Bird Count Hike \n\n\n10:30AM – 11:30AM — Bird Migration and Bird ID Presentation \n\n\nDr. Laura Banks is the president of the Bird Alliance of Central New Mexico. DESCRIPTION:Spring Garden Festival is a two-day celebration of nature in Spring that takes place on Saturday and Sunday of Mother’s Day weekend (usually the second weekend of May). Herbs\, vegetables\, wildflowers\, and native plants are offered for sale\, along with arts and crafts. Visitors are entertained each day by local bands that volunteer their talents for this event. Educational speakers address topics pertaining to local plants and wildlife. Each day of the festival also includes guided bird walks\, guided nature walks\, crafts for kids\, nonprofit booths\, bird identification with the Bird Alliance of Central New Mexico\, live birds from Wildlife Rescue\, a biofacts table\, and refreshments. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParking is $5. Friends of the Rio Grande Nature Center park for free.
